A father was killed as he walked along a beach yesterday with his young daughter after a small plane crash landed on the sand.
Police in Florida, USA, said the man, who has not yet been identified, had been walking along Caspersen Beach near the city of Venice.
The pilot and his passenger in a 1972 Piper Cherokee plane could not make it back to nearby Venice Airport.
Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said the pilot sent out a distress signal before trying to land on the beach.
The pilot and passenger were uninjured during yesterday afternoon’s landing, but the man walking his daughter was killed.
The girl was airlifted to the all Children’s Hospital in critical condition as officers from America’s National Transportation Safety Board rushed to the crash site.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Wendy Rose said it was not clear if the father was hit by the plane itself or by flying debris as it landed.
