Renowned Nigerian striker based in Malaysia, David Faramola Oniya, 30, has collapsed and died on Saturday, June 13, 2015.
Oniya, who played for and captained Malaysian side T-Team, had collapsed 3 minutes into a friendly match with Super League side Kelantan at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru.
The footballer who suffered heart attack allegedly did not receive medical treatment fast enough which possibly led to his death.
The Club’s chief executive, Syahrizan Mohd Zain, said that the driver that took him to the hospital was ‘driving too slow’.
He said, “He suffered a heart attack but it could have been a different story had the ambulance driver was alert. The driver was at the stands watching the game when Oniya suddenly collapsed and our defender was deprived of oxygen for several minutes.
“Oniya was sent to the hospital and the doctors tried their best to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at 10.05pm.”
According to reports, the match was called off in the 60th minute after the Nigerian was pronounced dead at the at the Raja Zainab II Hospital.
In the meantime, having informed the family of the deceased player about the development, T-Team is set to fly his remains back to Nigeria for proper burial arrangements and interment.
