The Senator representing Rivers Central Senatorial district, Magnus Abe, was hit with rubber bullets shot by the police in Rivers State on Sunday January 12th 2014 during a political rally in Port Harcourt.

According to reports, Abe sustained serious injuries from the close range hit. He is now receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Punch reports that “the police had gone to disperse a pro-Amaechi rally organised by the Save Rivers Movement, which held at the Rivers State College of Education, Rumuola, in Rivers State, at about 9am. The Senator had gone to inquire why the police would disperse the rally that was very peaceful. Instead, of giving reasons for their actions, the police shot at the Senator at close range, using rubber bullets which hit him around the chest area, leaving him critically injured.”

The Chief of Staff to Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, Tony Okocha was also hit by the rubber bullets, according to reports.

He sustained minor injuries.
