Reunited: Baby Victoria back with her mum and dad.
Four quick-thinking strangers helped track down snatched baby Victoria McMahon after recognising the suspect in CCTV pictures shared online.
A newborn baby abducted from hospital when she was just hours old has been reunited with her mum and dad thanks to Facebook.
Tiny Victoria McMahon was less than a day old when she was taken from the Ville-Marie Hospital in Quebec, Canada on Monday night.
A woman dressed as a nurse said she was taking the infant to be weighed, but carried the newborn out of the hospital and drove away with her in a car sporting a “baby on board” sticker.
The abduction sparked an “amber alert”, according to CTV News , with the suspect’s photo shared across local and social media in appeals to find the child.
Luckily, that photo was spotted on Facebook by Charlene Plant, who realised the wanted woman was a former neighbour.
She and three friends drove to the woman’s address, saw somebody was home and called police who burst into the house and found the baby.
The woman inside was arrested, and Victoria reunited with relieved mum Melissa McMahon three hours after she went missing.
Melissa posted a message on Facebook thanking all those who helped find her daughter, including the “marvellous” women who tracked Victoria down.
She said: “Four marvellous people, whom we had the chance to meet, identified this woman thanks to Facebook.”
“We felt a huge amount of support from the public. This victory is for you, too!”
She also warned new mums to always check that hospital staff are wearing proper identity badges, and described the moment she and her husband realised their daughter was gone as “the worst moment of our lives”.
She added: “I didn’t even dare imagine such a perfect ending.”
The woman arrested, who is in her 20s, was taken to hospital in police custody and is expected to appear in court shortly.
