OSUN, Nigeria – Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke emerged victorious after the Supreme Court struck down an appeal by former Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.
Oyetola had challenged Adeleke’s win in the July 16, 2022, Osun governorship election, alleging overvoting. The five-man panel of justices, however, dismissed the appeal, stating it lacked merit, and upheld Adeleke’s victory at the Appeal Court.
Moments after the ruling, Governor Adeleke, who represented the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, expressed his gratitude to the people of Osun State for their unwavering support. “I describe this victory as one dedicated to the Almighty God and the people of Osun,” he said. “They stood by me to let me know that they love me and I love them back.”
The PDP also applauded the judgment, emphasizing its popularity among Nigerians and dedication to nation-building. “This victory is a confirmation of our Party’s popularity in Nigeria and commitment to nation-building,” the PDP announced on Twitter. “Congratulations to him, the people of Osun State, and the entire PDP family.”
