The Sacred Pause: The Sin of Seeing Evil and Doing Nothing

Must read

Speaking against injustice becomes a Christian responsibility when remaining silent allows evil to continue unchallenged.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German pastor and theologian who opposed Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime. While many church leaders accommodated Nazi ideology or avoided confronting it, Bonhoeffer rejected the regime’s interference in the Church and its persecution of Jewish people.

He helped lead the Confessing Church, trained pastors through an unauthorised seminary and later joined a resistance network seeking to overthrow Hitler. Bonhoeffer was arrested in 1943 and executed at Flossenbürg concentration camp on April 9, 1945.

“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”
James 4:17, KJV

Knowing Is Not the Same as Acting

It is possible to recognise injustice, discuss it privately and still do nothing that challenges it.

Bonhoeffer understood that Christian faith could not remain confined to sermons while people were being persecuted. There are moments when private disagreement is inadequate and truth must become visible through action.

God does not reveal what is right only to increase our knowledge. He expects truth to shape our choices.

Silence Can Protect the Wrong Person

Silence may feel neutral, but neutrality can benefit those causing harm. When lies go unchallenged, they spread. When vulnerable people are abandoned, their oppressors become stronger.

“Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.”
Proverbs 31:8–9, KJV

Speaking may cost approval, relationships, opportunities or personal comfort. But the fear of consequences does not remove our responsibility to do what is right.

Courage Requires Discernment

Not every disagreement is persecution, and not every personal preference is a moral cause. Christian courage requires prayer, verified truth, humility and wisdom.

We should not speak simply to appear brave or attract attention. We speak because someone may be harmed if everyone remains silent.

Ask yourself: Who is protected by my silence, and who is left vulnerable because of it?

There are times to listen, times to wait and times to speak. When truth, justice and human dignity are under attack, silence can become complicity.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, give me wisdom to recognise injustice and courage to respond faithfully.

Keep me from careless speech, false accusations and self righteous anger. Help me to know when to remain silent and when silence would protect wrongdoing.

Use my voice to defend truth, uphold justice and speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

The Sacred Pause presents Christian reflections rooted in Scripture, offering encouragement, prayer and practical wisdom for everyday life. It forms part of The Trent’s broader exploration of faith, meaning and the human experience.
