Tribunal’s Electoral Face-Off: Labour Party’s Counsel Puts INEC in the Hot Seat Over Preparedness

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Labour Party’s legal counsel, Levi Uzoukwu, expressed doubt regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission’s, INEC, readiness to defend itself in the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

The claim was made on Monday, July 3, 2023, when the court adjourned its resumed sitting due to the absence of INEC’s first defense witness.

Speaking to journalists outside the courtroom, Uzoukwu articulated his concerns over INEC’s conduct, highlighting what he perceived as inconsistencies and contradictions.

“Given the contradictions and inconsistencies and what INEC has done; I’m sure they are not ready to defend this case,” Uzoukwu asserted.

He expressed hope that INEC would present a solid defense in order to shed light on the electoral process for the public. “I stand to be proven wrong, but I would wish that they defend this matter so that the public will see more things of what happened in this election,” he added.

Uzoukwu stressed that the February 25th presidential poll was unlike any other in Nigerian history, and emphasized that it is up to INEC to decide whether to call upon witnesses.

He assured that he and his client, the Labour Party, are prepared for any eventuality.

This development adds to the growing tension and scrutiny surrounding the February 25th election, which has been marred by allegations and accusations from various quarters. The role of INEC, as the principal electoral body, is central to these discussions.

As the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal continues, it remains to be seen how INEC will respond to these concerns, and whether it will take steps to address the issues raised by the Labour Party’s counsel.

Nigerians are closely watching the developments, as they could have far-reaching implications for the country’s democratic process and the integrity of its electoral institutions.

The INEC is yet to comment on Uzoukwu’s statements or clarify its position regarding its preparedness for the tribunal proceedings.

The nation awaits their response and the unfolding of events at the tribunal with bated breath.
