Peter Obi
Labour Party 2023 Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi

Ifeoma Ezeonu, a professor of Medical Microbiology & Molecular Genetics at the University of Nsukka, has reacted to the report making rounds that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, graduated with a pass in Philosophy.

The lecturer in a post on her Twitter account said when she hears people talk about Obi studying Philosophy she laughs, wondering what he was looking for in that department.

Ezeonu who noted that she didn’t meet Obi in school said she heard that he was busy with business while in UNN.

According to Ezeonu, Obi graduated with a pass not because he was not intelligent but because he was in the wrong department.

She further stated that the presidential candidate has earned other certificates in what he loved doing (Business and Economics).

Ezeonu in her post wrote, “As a lecturer, when I hear them talk about @PeterObi’s Pass in Philosophy, I laugh.

From what we know of PO today, I wonder what he was even doing in a Philosophy Dept.

“Lol I didn’t meet him in UNN, but those who knew him say that even as an undergrad the guy was doing business.

“Just in case some people didn’t get my point.

“He made a Pass because he was in the wrong Dept not because he’s not intelligent.
Since then, he has earned other certificates in what he actually loves doing – Business and Economics.

“That Pass is irrelevant to what he can do.”

    • You may be right… But then, time have proven again and again all over the world that ability isn’t reflected by ones degree in the higher institution. Infact, the most successful persons in the US are often the street smarts as opposed to the book smarts.

    • Pass in a reputable university is better than those that didn’t go to school at all no certificates and they have been ruling this country and still want to rule

      • My sentiments exactly. Where is Buhari’s degree certificate(s) or any certificate at all? Where are Tinubu and Atiku’s certificates? We pursue the wrong things in Nigeria that is why we are where we are today. Among the 3 presidential candidates, Obi is the only one that has a verifiable source of income/wealth and that is not linked to participation in government.

    • I wish Buhari even passed elementary 6. Don’t compare a start illiterate to a University graduate even with a pass degree.

    • Peter Obi’s words

I sincerely thank my supporters for believing in me and my commitment to building a united, secure and well-functioning Nigeria. However, I appeal once more that we should be tolerant of other people’s views, dissent and divergent opinions & possibly learn from them.

While the frustration and anger in the country is understandable, we must strive to channel that energy positively in ways that will earn the support and collaboration of others.

Even as our message continues to gain broad acceptance, there are some we still need to work to convince. In expressing ourselves, we should do so with grace so as not to precipitately shut doors to future collaborations on sustainable nation-building.

      Comrade, plz, be calming down.

  1. This lecturer needs to learn about the value of philosophy. This is a course that every single person seeking to be a leader should study.

    • So Mr Buhari studied philosophy, Tinubu, Atiku and all other candidates all studied philosophy. I’m disappointed with your reasoning

      • Oh, common country man, I think you misunderstood this guy. He said that Philosophy is a course any one aspiring to be a political leader should or ought to study because of its relevance to leadership. This is how I understood it. Cheers!

      • Even if he failed totally, the fact is that he’s no longer in that level now. Things have changed. He has updated himself and is among the highly educated ones today. He’s digital not analogue

    • As in eeeh! I looked for a way to contact her and let her know that indeed, with philosophy you can be anywhere. I also studied Philosophy at UNN and I am a PRO in a mining company. You see!
Besides, Obi didn’t come out with a pass. It was second class

    • This is not slight the course Philosophy. What the Prof is saying is that Peter Obi has an area of competence in economics rather than philosophy.

  2. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the course he took. There are so many great who read Philosophy alone and were able to make outstanding impact in the world. With the array of relevant courses he took subsequently from world class institutions across the world and his outstanding achievements how can any right thinking person fault his qualification? Many great achievers in this country came out with a pass and we benefited from their impact. Peter OBI is outstanding, brilliant and is blessed with all it takes to rule Nigeria.

  3. One point is clear, Prof Ijeoma’s assessment of Obi being in a wrong department is uncalled for. Many people like Obi entered the university for courses of any choice. He knew he will enventually return to his father’s business. So it did not matter. The only thing that mattered was to go to the university like his peers were doing as a fashion of the time.

Obi attended the UNN and graduated like others in his class. The rest is what he himself wanted to do with his education.

As a businessman, he was focused and moved into the banking industry and performed more than those who finished with first class. Grade can help to negotiate the next academic pursuit level. Yet after first degree in one field, many change to other courses and move on.

Peter moved with the finance and administration to prove himself far better than what he did with philosophy.

Essentially, philosophy gave him a preparation and discipline. Struggling with running a business as a student is not an easy feat.

I had a room mate who was like Peter Obi at school. His mindset was just to complete his studies and hang his certificate in his office. He did so.

Many Nigerians who had interest in their family estate businesses never minded or planned to read for first class. We must congratulate Obi for being able to finish at all in Nigeria where money speaks but he was not cartied away by money and business he was managing.

Apart from that, no one else in the Nigerian political class is as educated in economic management as Obi hmself. He is sound, brilliant, intelligent, friendly and of public welfare conscious. He is for the good of the other in the country in which we call Nigeria.

    • Prof., this is apt and accurately responses to the subject-matter that should bury any ill-intention toward the intelligent quotient of Peter Obi. Many detractors are looking for woes to bring him down. Their efforts will end in futility. By the way, the Prof. Ifeoma’s comment is below the belt. She should delete it and next time present something weighty and invaluable that unduly represent the deserving candidature of Peter Obi. I hope she is OBIdient!

  4. Hmmmmm. He went to college to study but half of his attention was into private business. (according to Lady lecturer) I hope Peter Obi will not leave governance to pursue his own business in the offshore markets. He did that in Anambra. Let’s call a spade a spade PO is not the Messiah. He is pure and simple one of them.

      • Peter Obi’s words

  5. All that matters is that he attended the said institution (UNN) what ever he came out with is irrelevant.
Question is , can he govern Nigeria. ?
    Answer is YES
Reason is He is healthy, competent and young

  6. The Obidient man has degree of which no part of the construction that spell a class of degree for the office of Mr President.Thank he has degree certificate not affidavit

  7. Why are you people so bothered about his studying Philosophy as though ones choice of study is now what the federal Constitution requires for one to qualify as a president. If you think you don’t like that area of study, focus on the other ones he has like Business and Economics which should be the thing!

  8. Weather pass or first class. Let get sense now. If we miss obi NIGERIA we forever regret it. Obi aside his unn had several certificate obtain from wonderful and great school all over the world. Like he always says go and verify I have been in the best of school. He add the 21st century economy is not driving significantly by physical infrastructure but intellectual property. Go to Harvard University and check their budget for reaserch and development. It’s more bigger that states budget . That’s what obi represent…..a man who had more than 50 certificate and you are telling me nonsense.

  9. At least has not hidden the fact that he had a third class, and he has since gone beyond that level to achieve outstanding feats in the area where his passion lies.

  10. She didn’t say that there’s a problem with philosophy. That’s not what I understand from her statement. She’s saying that based on what we know now concerning the way Obi understands business and economics that he would have followed that path earlier. To wonder what somebody is doing in a particular area he’s not doing too well when there’s another area he’s doing exceedingly well, doesn’t cast any aspersion of the area he’s not doing well. Just like asking, what one is doing there when he should be here?

My elder brother was in the same class with Peter Obi and he echoes exactly what Professor Ezeonu is saying. He was a very busy business person while in school. He didn’t tell me whether he had first class or pass. My elder today has a PhD in business and administration. He started with philosophy.

  11. The Most important thing is that he graduated. Class of degree is useless compare to the Success and Impact he had made. Research very well ,Prof Wole Soyinka, late Chief Gani Fawehinmi(SAN) and some other great
men in Nigeria didnt made 1st Class,2nd class while in University. but they are world class recognized Personalities today

  12. I wonder what this controversy is all about, whether philosophy or Bus admin, the issue is that this man graduated from the University, there’s is no place in the Constitution that is ,that if you had 2nd or 3rd class or even certificate of participation, you cannot contest or rule the country.. He is qualified.

  13. Anybody who is arguing whether Peter Obi is qualified to lead Nigeria based on his degree certificate is yet to come interm with the happenings in today’s world…

  14. The lecturer is not saying that philosophy is a bad course to study, No. What she’s saying is that PO would’ve done better if he had studied what he had passion for. This is why the whites are better than us, they don’t capitalized on your certificate but on your ability and capacity. Is all about what you can offer and the ability to deliver

  15. With pass, he is still better than those with no certificate, Buhari came with affidavit, no certificate, now Tinubu that no one knows anything about him, no certificate, not even a sworn affidavit is hustling to be another problematic president, I am just watching to see the credibility of INEC this time.

  16. Everyone is genius ,you only need to be in the right field to achieve best grades, however some schools/lecturers frustrate some students and they earn lower grades ,this doesnt mean the students were not serious enough like others( some are not actually serious tho). The truth is the damage would have been done and it results to issues like PO’s ,wish those with best grades during PO’s era in school could come out and contest for presidential positions now. This is to let us all know education can never stop Gods destiny and its not the best way to judge humans best performance of intelligence and brilliancy.

  17. What matters in education is that one pass his or her course and graduate from school. People always brings meaningless things at times to the the table. The goal of education is that one get to their destination ( pass and graduate). Whether you enter Economy or First class; the goal is to have a safe trip and reach your destination. Infact we did not see any evidence to hold this gentleman down, instead of us to calm down and watch . We came up with what someone will listen to and nodes their head in disbelief

  18. The only thing that would lay this to rest is the presidential debate. Please let the face-to-face presidential debate on TVs start now. We should not even care about missing certificates. Even a 1st class that is over 10 years old is equally irrelevant. Let us hear what they have done for us and what could do for Nigeria going forward.

  19. Those miscreant hitting on Peter OBI’S pass should first and foremost ask themselves where is buhari and tinubu’s certificates.

  20. Even if he failed totally, the fact is that he’s no longer in that level now. Things have changed. He has updated himself and is among the highly educated ones today. He’s digital not analogue

  21. Thank God he went to school. When leaders needed court to rule that they are fit to be in office because they have an evidence that they went to school not even a result, where were these people. In the history of Nigeria have we ever had technocrats like these contesting for presidency?
They know it, they have it and they have shown they can do it.
