Supplementary elections are currently taking place in Kebbi, Adamawa, and 22 additional states on Saturday, April 15, 2023. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has organized these elections across 2,660 polling units situated in 185 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 24 Nigerian states.
According to reports, voting has started at the Karyo/Umijin Nana/Baban Dutsi polling unit within the Maurida ward of Birnin-Kebbi Local Government Area in Kebbi State. The cancellation of votes in this polling unit was due to overvoting.
In Rivers State, supplementary elections are also being conducted in Port Harcourt Federal Constituency Two and Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency. The supplementary elections were deemed necessary due to instances of violence, destruction of election materials, interruptions of electoral proceedings, and over-voting.
In the Adamawa governorship election, the incumbent, Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), secured 421,524 votes, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Aishatu Dahiru, earned 390,275 votes. Nevertheless, INEC state collation officer, Prof. Muhammadu Mele, declared the election inconclusive because of the narrow margin of votes.
Similarly, in Kebbi, the APC garnered 388,258 votes compared to the PDP’s 342,980 votes. Professor Yusuf Sa’idu, the INEC Returning Officer in the governorship election, declared this election inconclusive as well.
As attention shifts to the second round of polling in these two states, each with 20 LGAs participating, supplementary elections are also being held for five senatorial seats and House of Representatives polls in 31 constituencies across 15 states. Additionally, State House of Assembly elections are occurring in 59 constituencies within 17 states.
