Women in the Acholi district of Uganda had some few months ago, stripped naked to protest against what they claimed was an attempt by government to grab their land.
Their demonstration was justified by the chairperson of Acholi Parliamentary Group, Mr Reagan Okumu, who said the action reflects a society desperate for government assistance.
Okumu stressed that the women had two options to protect their land; either to commit suicide or to walk naked, and they opted for the latter.
He said: “Whoever is criticising the women for stripping should put themselves in the shoes of the individuals who were on the verge of losing the only valuable asset that they own in the hands of uncaring government agents.”
The women had on Monday, April 16, 2015 undressed before ministers Daudi Migereko (Lands) and Aronda Nyakairima (Internal Affairs), protesting demarcation of a 40-square kilometre piece of land in Apaa, on the border between Amuru and Adjumani districts.
The land is claimed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and area residents.
