A driver following wrong instructions from a GPS plunged off a demolished bridge in Chicago, injuring himself and killing his wife.

Zohra Hussain, 51, died of burns after husband Iftikar drove off an elevated section of highway at the demolished Cline Avenue bridge, which has been closed since 2009.

Police investigators said the driver was using a GPS navigation system with outdated road information, and may have been paying more attention to it than to the road ahead.

Iftikar was able to climb out of the car but it burst into flames with his wife inside.

He is believed to have driven round barricades after the sat-nav directed him to cross the now-demolished bridge.

He is now stable in hospital.

A Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said, ‘The Cline Avenue bridge is marked with numerous barricades including orange barrels and cones, large wood signs stating ‘Road Closed’ with orange striped markings. There are concrete barricades across the road to further indicate the road is closed.
