The explosive spread of the Zika virus in the Americas has propelled the World Health Organisation, WHO, to convene a meeting of an expert committee aimed at determining if the virus constitutes a global health emergency.

The organization’s chief, Margaret Chan, said on Thursday, January 28, 2016 during an interaction with member state representatives in Geneva, that the level of alarm was extremely high.

According to her, the meeting became paramount following the alarming spread of the disease in about 23 countries and territories.

Zika virus has been tentatively linked to a spike in babies born with malformed heads in Brazil.
