101-Year-Old Man Sends SOS to Nigerian Police Over Son’s Abduction and Home Invasion

ENUGU, Nigeria – In an unprecedented case of alleged police brutality, a 101-year-old retiree, Pa Nicholas Ugwoke, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police over an alleged attack on his residence and the abduction of his 33-year-old son, Kingsley Chika Ugwoke.

Pa Ugwoke, who holds the title of the oldest man in Azuokpe village, Umudim, Ibagwa-Ani, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, claims that a squad of policemen raided his house, looted family belongings, caused significant destruction, and shot his son Kingsley before taking him away. His whereabouts remain unknown to the family.

In a petition which was also addressed to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and the Commissioner of Police, the centenarian lamented, “The heartbreaking thing is that nobody has told me or members of my family why my house was invaded and destroyed, and why my last son was shot and taken to an unknown place.”

Pa Ugwoke recounted the harrowing event: “On July 11, 2022, a team of armed police officers in seven Hillux Vans and one Sienna car stormed my house at 9.30am and opened fire on Mr. Ugwoke Kingsley Chika, who was wearing only his boxers as he had just finished his morning bath.”

The elderly Ugwoke explained that his son, a recent Microbiology graduate from Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, and head of the local vigilante group, was awaiting his call-up letter for the National Youth Service when the incident happened.

He continued, “After shooting him, the said team of police officers threw him into a Hillux van as if he was a lifeless wood… All these happened without any resistance from Kingsley, who was repeatedly crying in a very loud voice, demanding to know what offence he had committed.”

The police returned to his house two hours later, causing extensive damage to the building that he had built in 1960 and recently renovated.

They allegedly took away belongings including a CG motorcycle, Summec 27000 generator, and bags containing the family’s clothes. Pa Ugwoke’s sick wife’s diabetic drugs were also taken.

“The level of destruction in my house was heartrending and mind-boggling,” the centenarian lamented.

He now seeks answers and justice for his son’s abduction and the invasion of his home, asking authorities to hold accountable those responsible for the alleged police brutality.
