107 Customary Court Judges Sworn In By Lagos Chief Judge

The Chief Judge of Lagos, Justice Funmilayo Atilade on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 swore in 107 new judges of the customary courts.

The move is seen to be aimed at adequately replacing the aging staff of customary courts in the state.

The new judges comprises of 88 members and 19 presidents who are designated to service the 52 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas (LCDA) of the state.

Section 3 and 13 of the Customary Court Law, 2011, empowers the Chief Judge to make such appointments. This was made known by the executive secretary of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Mrs. Ayodele Odugbesan

After administering the oath of office to the new judges, Justice Funmilayo Atilade congratulated them and urged them to discharge their duties diligently.

“I congratulate you on your appointments. The present customary judges, having occupied the position and served well, it is important to replace the aging ones or those who have died.”

“The customary courts have jurisdiction to administer justice on road traffic issues, environmental issues and other offenses. I admonish all of you to be diligent and passionate. You must be a good listener, humble, above board and have the knowledge of the law of the land. In all, you must remember there is ultimate judge,” she said.
