Nigeria Government Will Continue On A Wasteful Spree Unless… – Anyaoku

Must read

Apparently infuriated over the dysfunctional structure of governance in the country, former Secretary General of Common Wealth of Nations, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, yesterday, declared that unless Nigeria returns to six zonal structure where the six geopolitical zones form the federating units, the country will continue on a wasteful spree devoid of any meaningful socio-economic impact.

The septuagenarian regretted the subsisting feeding-bottle practice of the 36 states that rally at the Federal Government monthly for split milk even as he bemoaned the inability of the states to pay workers’ salaries

The elder statesman expressed dismay at a public symposium organized by the Bible Society of Nigeria, BSN, tagged,”Impact of Bible translation on evangelism” held at Cathedral Church of Good Shepherd, Enugu.

While delivering a keynote speech, Anyaoku said: ”With the structure of governance we currently have in place where the 36 states run to the centre every month for survival, the country will certainly continue on a wasteful spree that will not yield the much expected socio-economic growth.

“We should return to the six federating units structure as was in the first republic when we had four federating units or regions to encourage rapid growth.”

On the fight against corruption that has ravaged every segment of the society, the former Common Wealth scribe lamented that, ”although Nigeria was described as the most prayerful country in the world, we are yet to see that translate to improved morals in the society. There is high level of corruption everywhere including that of exam malpractice where parents even encourage their wards to indulge.

“Religious institutions should teach their flocks on the virtues of hardwork. People should know that integrity and good character are the hallmark. The worshiping of money in our society should never be encouraged. Bishops,Imams should question people who donate huge sums of money in the church on their sources of income.”
