
On day two of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Chika Amalaha has won Nigeria its first gold medal after winning the 53kg category of the women’s weightlifting event.
16-year old Amalaha first lifted 85kg in the Snatch to set a new Games record, minutes after Indian duo Santoshi Matsa and Swati Singh had set a new mark by lifting 83kg.
She set a new Games Record lifting lift 111kg in the clean and jerk winning gold with a new total of 196kg while Dika Toua also lifted 111kg in the clean and jerk to claim silver with a 193kg total.
Winning the bronze medal is India’s Santoshi Matsa, lifting 105kg in the clean and jerk to finish with a total of 188kg while compatriot Swati Singh could only manage to lift 100kg in the clean and jerk to finish fourth.
Amalaha’s win gives Team Nigeria a second medal at the Games, following Nkechi Opara’s bronze medal on Day One in the 48kg category of the women’s weightlifting event.
