6 Days to Go, Governor Okowa Approves N71 Billion Supplementary Budget Bill

ASABA, Nigeria – Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa on Monday, May 22, 2023, gave his assent to the State’s Supplementary Appropriation Bill worth N71 billion, previously approved by the State House of Assembly.

The substantial budget was forwarded by Governor Okowa the previous Tuesday, May 16, 2023, with a vast majority – N65.5 billion earmarked for capital expenditure, and a further N5.6 billion allocated to recurrent expenditure.

Additionally, the Governor cemented his legacy by endorsing eight other groundbreaking Bills, setting a new trajectory for the state.

These included the Delta State Development and Property Authority Bill, 2022; Delta State Good Governance and Accountability Bill, 2022; and Delta State Sickle Cell Disorder Control Bill, 2023.

“We have had a very robust House of Assembly, and we will remain proud of their achievements,” said Governor Okowa after signing the bills, expressing his profound gratitude for the legislature’s cooperative efforts over his eight-year term.

“Even in the last days of this administration, they have continued to work so hard to ensure good governance in the state by making appropriate legislation that will impact on the lives of our people.”

Among the other legislation signed into law were the High Court (Amendment) Bill, 2023; Delta State Thanksgiving Day Bill, 2023; Delta State Creative Industry Development Bill, 2023; Delta State Polytechnic Burutu Bill, 2023; and the College of Health Science and Technology Bill, 2023.

The incoming Governor, Rt Hon Sherrif Oborevwori, a seasoned lawmaker, presented the Bills to Okowa for approval.

The soon-to-be governor praised the current administration’s accomplishments, specifically highlighting the cooperative nature of his tenure as Speaker of the Assembly.

“Today is a monumental day,” Oborevwori said, after the Governor’s approval of the bills.

“As I prepare to take the reins of this great state, I am eagerly anticipating translating my experience from the legislature to the executive branch. With the divine guidance, my MORE Agenda will strive to move Delta State further along the path of prosperity.”

This action-packed legislative development indicates Delta State’s commitment to tackling pressing issues head-on and improving the state’s governance, setting a promising tone for the incoming administration.
