It’s Been 9 Years Since We Heard From Missy Elliot: What Is She Up To?

Must read

It’s been almost nine years since music icon Missy Elliott has dropped a new album. It’s almost as if she dropped out of the industry. But in a recent interview with Michael Yo of Yahoo’s “The Yo Show”, Elliott spoke out about where she’s been all this time.

Elliott’s last album was “The Cookbook”, which she dropped back in 2005. After that album Elliott took a back seat to other artists, including Monica, Keysha Cole, Jennifer Hudson and Fantasia, as a writer and producer.

She did, however, give us a taste of what to expect on her seventh album, called “Block Party” that she had planned to release in the late 1980’s but the record never came out. She did however, tease us with songs like, “Best, Best” and “Shake Your Pom Pom.”

Missy Elliott fell out of the music scene again until the end of 2012 when she dropped two new singles with Timbaland called “9th Inning” and “Triple Threat”. Once again, Elliott mentioned a possible album release, but once again, it never materialized.

Elliott said, “When I create something, it’s gotta be special, and it can’t just be to throw something out there because I feel like I’m Missy.”

“I gotta feel like what I’m giving the fans is 100% and that it’s game-changing. I don’t just throw out microwave records,” she explained to Michael Yo

Missy Elliott was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease back in 2008, and she admits that the disease has played a part in her absence from the spotlight. Graves’ Disease is an autoimmune illness that affects the thyroid gland. Missy had to undergo a series of radiation treatments and medications. She says it has affected her motor skills, and she sometimes experiences dizziness and mood swings. But through medical treatments, she’s able to manage the disease.

In her absence, Elliott says she’s still been working behind the scenes writing and producing other artists, which has always been her first love.

She’s now back in the studio with Timbaland, working on her long awaited album, “Block Party.” She told VH1’s Behind the Music that she’s pretty sure she’ll stick with the same name previously announced for the album.

Although Elliott hasn’t given an expected drop date for the new release, she’s sure her fans will keep on waiting patiently until the time is right.
