ENUGU, Nigeria – In a shocking incident that has stirred widespread outrage, Honourable Wilfred Ikechukwu Ezike, more commonly known as Mgbiligba Anambra, recounted the harrowing abuse he endured at the hands of the Anambra State Anti-Touting Squad.

The assault, captured in a viral video, has highlighted the dangers faced by activists and whistleblowers in the region.

Speaking from an orthopedic hospital in Enugu on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, Mgbiligba revealed the extent of his injuries, which he fears may prevent him from walking again without assistance.

The activist, known for his outspoken stance against corruption and injustice in Anambra State, detailed the barbaric treatment meted out to him.

“It will take the grace of God for me to walk again with my two legs due to the barbaric treatment I suffered,” Mgbiligba recounted, describing how the squad targeted his head, hands, legs, and entire body with a pestle, all while recording the assault.

The controversy surrounding Mgbiligba’s ordeal stems from a dispute over a significant unpaid debt.

According to the activist, certain high-ranking officials within the current administration owe him N12 million, a claim that has seemingly led to a targeted campaign against him.

“I could not comprehend the grand conspiracy to terminate my life,” Mgbiligba stated, indicating a deep-rooted conflict involving powerful figures in the government.

In the wake of the attack, Mgbiligba has called for the intervention of human rights organizations, the Nigeria Police, and other relevant authorities, asserting that his life is in danger.

He alleged that his demand for the owed money led to his being framed by some government officials, who used the Anambra Anti-Touting Squad to not only dehumanise him but also force him into silence through an oath.

The incident has prompted a broader discussion on the safety of activists in Nigeria and the measures in place to protect them from retaliation.

Mgbiligba’s case, in particular, raises questions about the role of law enforcement and the accountability of government officials in safeguarding the rights and well-being of citizens.

As Mgbiligba continues his recovery, grappling with the physical and emotional scars of the attack, his plight underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms to ensure justice and security for all, especially those daring to challenge the status quo.
