Akwa Ibom: Governor Udom Wins At Supreme Court As Election Upheld

Must read

The Supreme Court sitting in Abuja has upheld the election of Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State.

The apex court on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 upheld the April 2015 governorship elections which Udom of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged the winner beating its closest rival, Umana Okon Umana of the All Progressives Congress (APC)

Umana and APC has contested the results at the Election Petition Tribunal citing irregularities in the electoral process, including the use of card readers.

The Tribunal upheld that Udom won the elections with the highest number of valid votes but called for a re-run in  16 Local Government Areas out of the 31 LGA’s in the state.

The APC appealed the verdict and the Appeal Court nullified the entire election and called for a re-run.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court has over ruled the judgement of the Appeal Court and has declared Governor Udom the duly elected governor of Akwa Ibom State.
