Council Of State Says Election Must Go On As Scheduled

The National Council of States on Thursday, February 5, 2015 rose from an 8-hour meeting with a resolution that the forthcoming general elections must go on as scheduled, although permission was granted for its postponement in areas declared insecure as a result of insurgent attacks.

Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) availed that it was poised to conduct the elections and the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) were still being distributed.

Those present at the meting included President Goodluck Jonathan, who presided over the meeting were Senate President David Mark. Speaker, House of Representataives, Aminu Tambuwal and former Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Musdafa Belgore.

Also present were all former Presidents and Head of States except Olusegun Obasanjo.

Others were governors from Anambra, Kogi, Katsina, Kano, Osun, Imo, Sokoto, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Niger, Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers, Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kwara, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Cross River, Enugu, Bauchi, Akwa Ibom, Jigawa, Edo, Ekiti, Gombe and Delta states.

Governors from Abia, Oyo and Borno were represented by their deputy governors while the acting governor of Taraba State was present.

The National Security Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), FCT Minister Bala Muhammed and the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation Mohammed Adoke were also present while the INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega and the country’s security chiefs made presentations at the meeting.
