Court Adjourns Bail Hearing of Nasir El-Rufai in ICPC Corruption Case to June

Must read

KADUNA, Nigeria — A High Court in Kaduna State on Monday, April 20, 2026, adjourned the bail hearing of Nasir El-Rufai to the first week of June, as proceedings continue in a case involving allegations of financial misconduct.

The adjournment was ordered by Justice Darius Khobo, who is presiding over the matter.

El-Rufai is facing multiple charges brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, which accuse him of financial crimes and abuse of office during his tenure as governor.

Court Proceedings and Security Presence

The former governor arrived at the court premises at about 9 a.m. in a convoy, accompanied by officials of the anti-corruption agency and operatives of the Department of State Services.

Security was heightened around the courthouse, with officers controlling access and maintaining order as supporters gathered outside during the proceedings.

Journalists were not admitted into the courtroom, where arguments on the bail application were expected to be presented by both the defence and prosecution.

Defence and Prosecution Positions

At a previous hearing, El-Rufai’s legal team argued that he did not pose a flight risk and would comply with any conditions set by the court if granted bail.

Following Monday’s session, his counsel, Ukpon Akpan, criticised the delay in the bail hearing, describing the adjournment as politically motivated.

Prosecutors have urged the court to weigh the seriousness of the charges in considering the bail request.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with proceedings expected to resume in June.
