The Federal Government has reacted to the continued closure of educational institutions in the country as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Tuesday, April 21, 2020, in Abuja, the minister of state for education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba said West African Examinations Council exam, WAEC, as well as the National Examinations Council, exam NECO, is postponed indefinitely.

The Ministry of Education had in March shut tertiary institutions, secondary, and primary schools in the country as a precautionary measure to curtail the spread of coronavirus.  The minister has stated that the Federal Government will communicate new resumption dates in due time.

Mr. Nwajiuba announced that there will be a coordinated effort among all the states in this regard because the lockdown in various parts of the country affects the access of students and teachers to educational institutions. He also asked for the cooperation of parents with regards to measures rendering online services to students who are staying at home during the lockdown period.

According to Nwajiuba, the minister of education, Adamu Adamu, had directed the Ministry through the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology, ICT, to enable students to learn online. The Federal Ministry of Education is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Information to offer educational content to students during the lockdown period.

Currently, about 14 to 15 states in the country, including Lagos and Anambra use different channels including radio and television to provide learning to students using an approved NERDC curriculum.
