Fight Over Girlfriend Turns Bloody As 1 Person Dies, 400 Displaced, 60 Houses Razed In Akwa Ibom (PHOTO)

A misunderstanding between two boys over a girlfriend during the weekend had turned both sour and bloody as it had escalated  into an inter-communal clash killing one person and rendering about 400 homeless with about 60 houses razed Akwa Ibom.
Two cars belonging to the monarch were damaged, property worth millions of Naira were destroyed, money were stolen, about 40 motorcycles, bicycles and ancestral heritages were torched during the encounter.

The fight according to Vanguard reports ensued between the youths of Ikot Umiang and Ikot Edah communities, Nkpat Enin LGA of the state.

Narrating the tragic clash to Niger Delta Voice,  a source who pleaded anonymity said, “A young man, who hails from Ikot Umiang and residing in Ikot Edah had a minor misunderstanding with his friend, an indigene of Ikot Edah, over a lady both of them had dated previously.

“What really transpired between them is not clear. But it was so serious that in the evening of the following day, when the Ikot Umiang boy was passing through Ikot Edah after his normal business, the Ikot Edah-based lover boy and his gang waylaid and stabbed him to death.”

The Ikot Umiang youth allegedly launched a reprisal attack on the Ikot Edah people at about 8 AM when they stormed the community densely armed with various dangerous weapons.

They reportedly set houses ablaze and captured some elderly residents who begged for pardon.

One of the villagers, Aniete Bradforth, who described the attack said, “The Ikot Umiang youths came in like soldier ants with guns, petrol and matches and before we knew what was happening, this house (pointing to a residence) was on fire.

“They beat up a 90-year-old woman, who lives here, leaving her with injuries all over her body.”

The village head, Usoro, confirmed the attack lamenting, “I watched my house set ablaze with N2 million cash inside.”

The police in the area were immediately alerted about the clash and they had since arrested some suspects.Moreover, it was gathered that the residents at Ikot Umiang  had fled the community in order to escape police arrest.

Lamenting her woes, a fish seller, who is in her 60s, Mmayen Bassey, said, “I have been keeping money in my wrapper for over 10 years to buy a piece of land. It has amounted to over N200,000. Today, I am as good as dead as they all got burnt; not even to talk about my goods.”
It was gathered that over 25 persons had been arrested and detained in connection with the incident.
