Former Haitian Dictator Jean-Claude ‘Baby Doc’ Duvalier Dies Of Heart Attack

Must read

The former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude ‘Baby Doc’ Duvalier has died of a heart attack aged 63.

His lawyer Reynold George confirmed he passed away at his home in the leafy hills above the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince.

After inheriting power from his father Francois ‘Papa Doc’ Duvalier when aged just 19 in 1971, Duvalier fled into exile in 1986 after a popular uprising.

After 25 years away in France, Duvalier returned to the impoverished Caribbean country in January 2011, allowing victims of his regime to pursue legal claims against him and prompting some old allies to rally around him.

He was briefly detained on charges of corruption, theft and misappropriation of funds.

He spent his late years in relative obscurity living in Haiti.
