ZARIA, Nigeria – Former Super Eagles winger Tijani Babangida and his wife were critically injured in a devastating car accident along the Kaduna-Zaria highway.
The incident occurred on Thursday, May 9, 2024, claiming the life of his brother, Ibrahim Babangida Tijani.
Tijani Babangida, known for his dynamic play with Ajax Amsterdam and the Nigerian national team, was behind the wheel when the tragedy struck.
The accident took place while traveling with his wife and brother, leading to severe consequences for all involved.
While Tijani and his wife survived the ordeal, they sustained injuries and were promptly admitted to hospitals for urgent care.
Tijani is currently receiving medical attention at Shika Hospital in Zaria, whereas his wife has been taken to the University of Zaria Teaching Hospital.
The loss of Ibrahim Babangida Tijani, 50, was confirmed by a close associate in an official statement.
“Comrades! Let us be in prayers for our president, Tijani Babangida, who just had a ghastly motor accident along the Kaduna-Zaria Road,” said Babayoro, expressing his sorrow.
He added, “May the soul of Ibrahim Babangida Rest In Peace with God, amen.”
Ibrahim, aged 47 at his time of passing, was also a celebrated footballer. He was part of the legendary Golden Eaglets squad that clinched the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Japan.
His career included stints with Nigerian clubs like Bank of The North, Stationery Stores, and Katsina United before moving abroad in 1997.
