Liberia’s former football star, George Weah has won a landslide victory in the just concluded Senate election in Liberia, BBC reports.
Following the result as pronounced on Saturday,December 27, 2014, Mr Weah won 78% of the vote for the Montserrado senatorial seat, which includes the federal capital, Monrovia.
The son of the president Ellen Sirleaf, Robert Sirleaf Johnson, got nearly 11% of the votes as the runner-up.
The election was reported to have recorded a low turnout in the poll, which was initially scheduled to hold in October, 2014 but was later postpones till December, 2014 due to the uncontrollable outbreak of the deadly Ebla virus.
The electoral process, according to reports witnessed a strict health controls as medical procedures were in place to prevent the spread of the disease.
The voters who came to their respective polling stations had their temperature taken as they were told to stand a metre apart and wash their hands with soap or sanitizer before and after voting.
Other winners in the senate elections include the ex-wife of the former Liberian president, Charles tailor, Jewel Howard-Taylor, and former Liberian rebel leader Prince Johnson who both retained their seats.
The National Elections Commission chairman, Jerome Korkoya, announced the winners of the poll and called off the exercised with a conclusive statement that the country have come to the “the end of a crucial journey”.
Recall that Mr Weah had in 2005 contested and won the first round of the presidential election,but losing the runoff to Ms Johnson-Sirleaf.
Mr Weah is the only African to be named Fifa’s world player of the year, winning in 1995 .
