Ghana: Peaceful Day As Voting Begins In Tight Presidential Race

Following a spirited campaigns in Ghana, the citizens of the West African Counry went to the polls early on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 to elect a president and members of the federal parliament who would form the 7th republican government.

Though there are seven presidential candidate, the media in Ghana casts the impression of a two horse race between incumbent President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress and the main opposition New Patriotic Party whose flag-bearer is Nana Addo.

Voting began at 7am in the morning. By 12 noon, The Trent’s correspondent, had visited 8 polling units spread across 5 constituencies in Accra – Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwe North, Okaikwe Central and Drobo Constituency – to observe the conduct of the poll.

The election was going on peacefully without incidences of violence. The electorate expressed excitement to cast their vote.

There is, however, a heavy presence of security personnel around polling units and strategic positions in the capital city of Accra.

From the information gathered from our correspondents in other parts of the country, the poll is being conducted peacefully and without incident.

Results are expected within three days, BBC reports.

A run-off will be held later in the month if neither of the two main candidates secures more than 50% of the votes.
