Grant Judiciary Autonomy – NBA Tells FG

NAN – The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) on Friday, January 16, 2015 advised the Federal Government to grant financial autonomy to the judiciary to enable its striking workers call off their strike.

The Chairman of Ikole-Ekiti Branch of the NBA, Mr Ademola Adeyemi, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ado-Ekiti.

Adeyemi said the strike action embarked by the workers did not only affect lawyers, but everybody in the society.

He said there were some duties that members of the public could have done in the court like swearing affidavits which they could not do because of the strike.

The chairman also said there were some government workers who would like to sign the Code of Conduct and which only a judge could do.

He said that the judiciary was agitating for its financial autonomy in order to be independent and free from any encumbrance from the executive arm of government.

He advised the Federal Government to inaugurate a committee in each state to look into the funding of the judiciary.

He also advised the Federal Government to fund the judiciary through the National Judicial Commission to avoid interference from other arms of government.
