House of Representatives to Investigate Death of 4-Year-Old Pupil at Brickhall School

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s House of Representatives has set up an ad hoc committee to probe the mysterious death of four-year-old Miguel Ovoke, a pupil at Brickhall School in Abuja.

The move comes after a motion presented by Hon. Kelechi Nwogu (PDP-Rivers) during the plenary session on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, which was unanimously supported.

Miguel was reportedly dropped off at school by his mother on April 24, 2024 only to be declared dead under unclear circumstances later that day.

The incident has raised significant concerns, with the deceased’s parents alleging that the school management, possibly in collaboration with local police, is concealing the truth behind their son’s death.

Expressing deep concern over the matter, Rep. Nwogu highlighted the distressing impact of the tragedy on Miguel’s family and classmates, as well as the potential damage to Nigeria’s reputation should the case remain unresolved.

“It is crucial for us to address this matter transparently to avoid public distrust in our educational and justice systems,” Nwogu stated.

The House observed a minute of silence in memory of Miguel and other children who have died under similar mysterious circumstances.

Speaker Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, emphasizing the urgency of the situation, directed the newly formed committee to conduct a thorough investigation and report their findings within four weeks.

The House intends to take further legislative action based on the committee’s report.

This case has drawn national attention, highlighting concerns over safety standards and accountability in educational institutions across the country.

Activists, led by Abuja-based influencer, Very Dark Man, have staged demonstrations at the school in Abuja, disrupting the school’s operations.

As the investigation unfolds, it is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Miguel’s untimely death and potentially prompt policy changes to enhance child safety in schools.
