Igala Youth Council Rejects Inclusion in Proposed ‘United States of Biafra’

Must read

LOKOJA, Nigeria – The Igala Youth Council, IYC, has firmly rejected the inclusion of the Igala nation in the Indigenous People of Biafra’s, IPOB, proposed ‘United States of Biafra.’

This decision came after an emergency meeting on December 1, 2024, in response to a viral video outlining IPOB’s vision for a 40-state Biafran nation.

In a statement on Sunday, December 1, 2024, by Michael Achor Joshua, National Publicity Secretary of the IYC, the group condemned IPOB’s unilateral decision to include the Igala nation without consultation.

“We were not invited to any discussions, nor do we support IPOB’s ambitions. Our focus is on achieving good governance within the Nigerian state, not being drawn into what we consider madness,” Joshua said.

The IYC emphasized that the Igala people remain committed to Nigeria’s unity and development, urging all Igala citizens worldwide to disregard IPOB’s claims and continue their lawful pursuits.

Widespread Backlash Against IPOB

IPOB’s inclusion of the Igala nation has sparked significant backlash.

Known for its advocacy for secession, IPOB has faced criticism for its controversial methods, such as imposing a weekly “sit-at-home” order that disrupts economic activities and daily life in the Southeast region.

The IYC’s outright rejection of IPOB’s agenda reflects broader resistance among communities outside the Southeast, with many insisting on Nigeria’s unity.

“The Igala nation’s focus is on peace, development, and fostering a strong Nigerian state,” the council reiterated.

A Call for National Unity

The IYC’s statement is a clear declaration of the Igala nation’s stance, rejecting IPOB’s secessionist aspirations and reinforcing their commitment to national cohesion.

It also serves as a reminder of the need for dialogue and mutual respect among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups in the pursuit of progress and unity.
