Man Jailed 2 Months For Stealing 8 Pieces Of Chewing Gum In Abuja

A 23-year old man was on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 arraigned before a Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja for allegedly stealing 8pieces of chewing gum valued at 1,600 naira.

The defendant, Prosper Mofor, of Jabi Village, Abuja pleaded guilty to the one count charge and was sentenced to serve a 2-month jail term with an option of 10, 000 naira fine and a stern warning to desist from crime.

Mofor pleaded for leniency and told the court that hunger pushed him into stealing but the judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, ordered the convict to pay N30, 000 to the nominal complainant.

The prosecutor, Salisu Khaleel, told the court that one Mariam Ibrahim of same address with the convict reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on Saturday, March 19, 2016.

According to Khaleel, Mofor criminally entered the complainant’s shop on March 18, 2016 and stole eight pieces of Orbit chewing gum, two cans of Titus sardine valued at N300 and a can of Malt drink valued at N120.

The prosecutor also told the court that the convict made away with N80,000 cash and according to him, the offence is punishable under Section 288 of the Penal Code.
