Police Officer and Vigilantes Arrested After Mob Kills 2 Alleged Witches In Adamawa

DUMNE, Nigeria – Two women were killed by a mob in Adamawa State over allegations of witchcraft. A police inspector and members of a local vigilante group were also implicated in the murder.

On Sunday, June 11, 2023, the Adamawa State Police Command confirmed the incident, revealing the arrest of 10 suspects, including the police officer and the vigilante members.

A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, revealed the discovery of a disturbing viral video.

“Adamawa State Police Command came across an unfortunate video which has gone viral in some sections of the media, especially social media, where an Inspector of Police and some members of Vigilantes attached to Dumne Divisional Police Headquarters, were sighted maltreating and assaulting three women unprofessionally,” the statement read.

According to the statement, the women were stripped naked and brutally assaulted by the mob on the grounds of alleged witchcraft, resulting in the death of two of the women.

The implicated police officer, Ahmed Suleiman, alongside the vigilante members and other individuals visible in the video, a total of 10 suspects, were arrested upon orders from the State Commissioner of Police, CP Afolabi Babatola.

The Commissioner immediately deployed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, who took the officers into custody and arrested all those seen in the video.

“Equally, the CP has ordered a thorough investigation into the immediate and remote causes of this condemnable incident as well as ensure speedy dispensation of justice,” added Nguroje in the statement.
