President Goodluck Jonathan at the pre-inauguration dinner held in honour of the incoming General Muhammadu Buhari led administration on Thursday, May 28, 2015 in Aso Rock conferred the title of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on the vice president-elect, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.
The tile of GCON is a title which is customarily conferred on the vice president. The president gets the title of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic but by virtue of General Buhari’s status as a former Nigerian head of state, he already had the title and there was no need for another one to be bestowed on him by President Jonathan.
The title of the GCON is awarded based on the National Honours Act No. 5 of 1964 and is not restricted to the vice president alone. The Senate President and Chief Justice of the Federation also gets the title of GCON.
