PARIS, France — Nigerian President Bola Tinubu made his first public remarks regarding the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele, during an interactive session with Nigerians on Friday, June 23, 2023, living in France and neighboring European countries.
The session took place on the sidelines of the New Global Financing Pact Summit held in Paris.
In a candid assessment, President Tinubu condemned the state of Nigeria’s financial system under Emefiele’s tenure as “rotten.”
He pointed to the multiple exchange rates as a primary reason many Nigerians living abroad were unable to remit money to their families back home.
“Then the financial system was rotten. Few people making bags of our money and then you yourself, you stopped sending money home to our poor parents. Several windows… but that is gone now, is gone,” Tinubu stated.
He further commented on Emefiele’s current situation, noting that the former CBN Governor is in the custody of the authorities.
“The man is in the hands of authorities, something is being done about that, they will sort themselves out,” he added.
This development marks a significant moment in Nigerian politics as President Tinubu’s remarks signal a firm stance on financial reform and accountability.
It remains to be seen what further actions will be taken concerning Emefiele and how this will impact Nigeria’s financial system moving forward.
Stakeholders in Nigeria and the international community will be watching closely as the Nigerian government navigates through this high-profile case involving the former head of its central bank.
Financial experts and Nigerians living abroad are also likely to closely monitor how these developments will affect remittance channels, exchange rates, and the overall stability of the Nigerian economy.
