Renowned scholar and former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission of Nigeria (NECON) Professor Okon Edet Uya, is dead.
Professor Uya passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital [UCTH] where he has been admitted two weeks ago.
Before his death, Uya served as Head of the History Department, Dean of Arts, Deputy and Acting Vice-Chancellor, and Director, Institute for Public Policy and Administration (IPPA),University of Calabar, Nigeria.
He has also served as Ambassador to Argentina with accreditation to Chile, Peru and Uruguay. He was Chairman and Chief Executive of the National Electoral Commission of Nigeria, Professor of History(till his death) at University of Uyo, University of Calabar, and Howard University. Professor Uya obtained a PhD in History from University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA.
