Scavenger Jailed 15 Months For Dealing In Indian Hemp

NAN – A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday, sentenced a 28-years-old man Obinna Ofia ,to 15 months imprison for drug trafficking.

The convict, a scavenger, was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a one-count charge bordering on trafficking.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused, who was not represented by a legal practitioner, pleaded guilty to the charge.

Following his plea, the prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, tendered before the court as evidence, the statement of the accused.

He then urged the court to sentence the accused based on the evidence adduced by prosecution.

In her verdict, Hon. Justice Rabiu Shagari , found the accused guilty as charged.

She accordingly sentenced him to a term of 15 months imprison, and directed that it should start from the date of his arrest.

The judge also ordered the exhibit to be destroyed by the NDLEA.

The prosecutor,Aerman, had told the court that the convict was arrested on Oct. 23, 2015 at Katangula, near Abule Egba in Lagos, where he sourced for condemned metals.

He said that Ofia was found in possession of about 200g of Cannabis Sativa, also known as Indian Hemp, which he sold to people.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30 Laws of the Federation 2004.
