AKURE, Nigeria – The Commander of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, declared the organization’s zero tolerance for indiscipline and revealed that four officers had been dismissed for violating the agency’s guidelines.

Speaking to reporters in Akure, Adeleye explained, “The corps has taken strong actions against officers who breached our codes. We’ve dismissed four, and several others are undergoing correctional measures to adhere to our operational standards.”

In the past two years since its inception, Amotekun has reportedly arrested around 7,000 criminals.

Adeleye stated that 1,500 of these individuals have been formally charged in court.

He commended support from other security agencies like the Army, Police, and the Department of State Services, DSS, mentioning the DSS’s role in providing geo-location data for kidnap cases.

Adeleye highlighted their achievements saying, “With other security agencies’ support, we’ve been able to arrest over 7,000 suspected criminals. About 1,500 have been prosecuted, and many have already been judged. Due to the high volume of cases, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu sanctioned the construction of two additional courts for swift justice.”

Furthermore, the commander credited Amotekun with a significant reduction in the state’s longstanding conflicts between farmers and herdsmen.

He noted that crises have decreased by over 95% in the last two years.

“We initiated broad public enlightenment campaigns to educate both parties about their rights. We then met with Miyetti Allah representatives to clarify our position and began strict enforcement after a specified deadline,” Adeleye added.

The initiatives of the Amotekun Corps have been instrumental in re-establishing peace and security in the region, thereby boosting residents’ confidence and livelihoods.

Amotekun Corps Commander, David Akinremi, Dies After ‘Prolonged Illness’

A retired Commissioner of Police, Akinremi passed away on Monday, June 26, 2023, after battling an undisclosed illness for a prolonged period, according to reports.

In 2021, Governor Dapo Abiodun appointed Akinremi as the pioneer Commander of the Amotekun Corps, which had been newly established in Ogun State at that time.

The Amotekun Corps, under Akinremi’s leadership, actively collaborated with other security agencies in efforts to combat crime and ensure security within the state.

The Commander of the So-Safe Corps, Soji Ganzallo, confirmed Akinremi’s death and expressed deep sorrow, describing the news as “a rude shock.”

David Akinremi’s passing marks a significant loss for Ogun State, where he played a pivotal role in security efforts as the head of the Amotekun Corps.

The state government and security agencies will be tasked with finding a successor who can carry on the efforts made by Akinremi in enhancing security within the region.
