ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has returned to Nigeria after a 12-day trip that took him across Asia and South America for diplomatic and economic engagements.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, the presidential jet departed Brasília International Airport at 12:57 p.m. local time on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
Carlos Duarte, Brazil’s secretary for Africa and the Middle East, and Carlos Garcete, Brazil’s ambassador to Nigeria, joined Nigerian officials at the airport to bid him farewell.
Among those present was Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, minister of state for foreign affairs.
Tinubu left Abuja on Friday, August 15, 2025, stopping briefly in Dubai before arriving in Yokohama, Japan, on Monday, August 18, 2025, to attend the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9).
The conference, hosted by the Japanese government in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the African Union Commission, and the World Bank, focused on Africa’s economic transformation through private investment, innovation, and institutional reforms.
After his engagements in Japan, Tinubu made a three-day stopover in Los Angeles before proceeding to Brasília, where he spent two days meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and senior officials.
During the visit, Nigeria and Brazil signed several memoranda of understanding, including agreements on aviation, foreign affairs, science and technology, and agriculture.
