Mr Ejeh Smith and his wife, Grace Smith, who were allegedly brutalized by a police corporal attached to the Ikoyi Police Division, have sued the Nigeria Police Force for battery with the damage cost of N100 million.

The suit was filed by popular Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana on behalf of the couple, asking the police to compensate the victims for the injuries, medical state and trauma they suffered from the power drunk police officer, Dada Ogunsanya.

Inspector General of Police, Abba Suleiman, had earlier instructed that an immediate investigation should commence on the case, but the counsel of the couple, Femi Falana, has filed a claim for N100m damages on behalf of the victims.

The statement released by Femi Falana chambers reads:

We are suing the police for N100 million. We will finalise all documentations by Friday, December 19, 2014 and latest by Monday,December 22, 2014, we will be in court,” the statement reads.

“Frankly speaking, in a democratic setting, what happened to the couple was uncalled for. It is unfortunate that we now have policemen who have no regard for citizens’ rights and have little or no regard for authorities.”

“There is need for the society to rise up and checkmate them at this stage. If we don’t do anything, things could get out of control. The police said they have started taking some administrative decisions, that they have transferred the DPO. That is not enough. We want the in-house administrative discipline publicised in the media,” it added.
