Tragic Incident at Gombe State University: Day-Old Baby Found Dead Near Female Hostel

Must read

GOMBE, Nigeria — A shocking and tragic incident occurred at Gombe State University’s main campus on Saturday, September 9, 2023, when a day-old baby was found dead near Hall IV of the female hostels.

The baby was discovered in the early morning hours by a passerby who immediately raised the alarm.

However, it was too late; the baby was already dead due to injuries sustained to its right leg.

The incident drew a large crowd of sympathizers who gathered near the female hostels discussing the heartbreaking event.

University authorities have commenced an investigation into the matter but have yet to trace the baby to any of the female students.

According to an anonymous eyewitness, the mother had been hiding her pregnancy for months under her hijab gown.

University Public Relations Officer Mohammed Abubakar confirmed that a female student has been identified as the suspected perpetrator.

“It is a serious action and the university is investigating it. Disciplinary action will be taken because it is a crime to murder a baby. If it is a matter of delivering the baby, there is no problem. But throwing an innocent day-old baby to death is a crime,” said Abubakar.

Police Take Over Investigation

The Gombe State Police have taken over the investigation from the university for thorough scrutiny. ASP Mahid Mua’zu, the police spokesperson, stated that they were alerted about the incident through social media.

“We have already taken up the matter. The investigation has commenced, and the baby has been taken to the hospital for examination. We are trying to identify the culprit,” Mua’zu said.

The incident has shocked the campus and the community at large, raising concerns about the welfare and mental health of students, especially young women, at the university.

The occurrence also draws attention to broader societal issues surrounding reproductive rights, stigma associated with pregnancy out of wedlock, and the availability of support systems for young women in similar circumstances.

As the university and law enforcement agencies continue their investigation, the community awaits justice for the innocent life lost, and solutions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
