LAGOS, Nigeria — Uber ended its operations in Nigeria on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the company told customers in an email.
The ride-hailing platform did not provide a specific reason for leaving beyond saying it had reviewed the business.
“We are writing to share some difficult news. After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the company said.
“Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life connecting you with independent transportation providers.
In its message, the company described its time in the country as a privilege and thanked customers for using its platform for daily commutes, visits to family and journeys around their cities.
The company acknowledged that the shutdown could disrupt customers’ routines and apologised for the inconvenience.
Uber said its Help Centre would remain accessible until September 23, 2026, for customers seeking assistance with final account enquiries.
The notice did not explain the commercial or operational considerations behind the decision.
It also did not provide details about arrangements for drivers and other independent transport providers who used the platform.
Uber’s departure ends its presence in Nigeria more than a decade after it began connecting passengers with drivers in Lagos.
