A man who feigned madness has been arrested by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, of Lagos State Police Command with 22 Automatic Teller Machine, ATM, cards, two mobile phones and power bank along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Victoria Island.
The 39-year-old man identified as Lanrewaju Jaiyeola, was said to have carried a backpack in a way that aroused suspicion which further fuelled his arrest by the police.
A reliable police source said 22 assorted credit cards of different banks with different names, one Nokia phone, a blackberry, a power bank, several bank tellers of recent bank transactions and lots of invoices, amidst numerous pieces of papers, were found on him, Vanguard reports.
The source disclosed that 8 out of the 22 ATM cards were still valid. Three of the cards would expire in 2018, another three would expire in 2017, while two would expire in 2016.
When contacted, the RRS Commander, ACP Olatunji Disu, confirmed the arrest, adding that when the officials arrived the RRS Headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja, the suspect made “statements suggestive of somebody disguising as a mad man to perpetrate crime around that axis.”
He said: “Initially, we noticed that he was mentally balanced because he was answering the questions posted to him adequately.
“But all of a sudden, he started sounding incoherent and illogical. He threatened the investigative Police officer, saying ‘I will make life unbearable for you if you don’t let me go.”
