Douglas McAuthur McCain is not the only American killed while fighting for ISIS in recent days, a coalition of Syrian opposition groups said Wednesday.
A second American was killed in a battle with rival opposition groups as well, said the coalition, which calls itself the Nahrawan of Syria.
But while the coalition released photos of McCain’s body and his passport, it did not offer any evidence of a second American’s death.
ISIS, which sometimes comments on the death of its “martyrs,” has made no official mention of the death of any American fighters.
In a statement, the Nahrawan of Syria said it came together to battleKharijites, a historical reference to fanatical Muslims who rejected moderate teachings and advocated killing those who violated ultraconservative values. The statement did not specifically name ISIS.
The coalition includes the “Hazem Movement, the Islamic Front, Al-Mujahideen Army, Noureddine, al Zanki Battalion, Faylak Al Sham and others,” the statement said. The coalition supports the Syrian revolution against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
Via Facebook, the Nahrawan coalition told CNN that the Free Syrian Army and al-Nusra Front have also joined in the fight against ISIS in Aleppo.
The Nahrawan coalition said the fighting where the two Americans were killed took place in the countryside north and east of Aleppo on Sunday.
Previously, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based group that monitors the conflict in Syria, said McCain, 33, died while fighting rival extremist groups in the Aleppo suburbs.
Like U.S. officials, the group characterized McCain as an ISIS fighter and said he was killed battling al-Nusra Front, an al Qaeda-linked organization that the U.S. government has blacklisted as a foreign terror organization.
