OWERRI, NIGERIA — A 29-year-old man from Ihitte-Owerre community in the Orlu council area of Imo State has been arrested and charged for the gruesome murder of his friend, and the subsequent sale of the victim’s organs to ritual practitioners.
The shocking revelation was made by the Imo state police command, which paraded the suspect, Emeka Egbuaba, alongside other alleged criminals at the state police headquarters.
The case involved the brutal murder and harvesting of the vital body organs of Sixtus Ezebudo, a resident of the same Ihitte-Owerre community.
The state police command’s spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Henry Okoye, gave the briefing on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Barde, on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.
“Intelligence led investigation and sustained follow-up to a case that was initially reported as a Missing Person led to the arrest of the 29-year-old male, Emeka Egbuaba, by operatives of the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit in his criminal hideout in Lagos State,” ASP Okoye explained.
He also noted that Egbuaba had confessed to being an organ trafficker.
This gruesome case underscores the growing concern about the illegal organ trade and the lengths some individuals are willing to go to profit from it.
As this situation continues to unfold, questions remain about the networks that Egbuaba was associated with, and the extent of organ trafficking within the country.
