There was tension on Monday, April 25, 2016 in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State as protesting by youths injured over 20 persons and razed at least 15 buildings.
The protest followed the introduction of new youth movement in the area, codenamed “Obiano Youth Vanguard”. Besides damaging buildings and youths sustaining various degrees of injuries, five cars were also destroyed.
The Authority reports that the youths took to the streets protesting the alleged introduction of another youth movement, insisted that they do not want another youth movement in the community.
Speaking from their respective hospital beds, Nonso Nwangwu, Chijioke Ejindu, Chukwuebuka Osadebe and Anene Maduka who had machette cuts on their heads, legs, hands, waists and chests stated that the Obosi Land Management Committee Council, otherwise called Obosi Youths, took them by surprise.
“Some of us were in our various houses and some were enjoying themselves for the introduction Obiano Youth Vanguard in Obosi when they stormed riding on motorcycles numbering over 70,” one of the victims told journalists.
Ngozi Afoagu and Mrs. Ngozi Okeke narrated their ordeal and how their houses were burnt down adding that the only solution to the crisis is peace.
“To worsen the situation, they said that the new youth movement headed by Omezie Chukwurah is a rival group that would not be allowed to exist and urged the state governor, Willie Obiano, to intervene.
Unfortunately, the youths were making their demands from the wrong quarters as the Omezie-led youths were already sanctioned by the Governor as Omezie was appointed as Obiano’s Aide on Youths Mobilisation.
