An American doctor working in Ebola struck Liberia is reported to have tested positive to Ebola.

The doctor, who is yet to be identified works with the missionary group, SIM USA, USA Today reports.

This is the third American aid worker who has contracted the deadly Ebola virus in Liberia, and the second who works with SIM USA.

According to reports, the doctor was not  treating patients at the Ebola isolation centre but was treating pregnant women and those giving birth in the capital of Liberia, Monrovia.

SIM USA has issued a statement saying that it is unknown how the doctor was infected and he isolated himself as soon as he developed symptoms.

The doctor has been transferred to an Ebola isolation unit in Liberia and is ”in good spirits”.

Previously, two American aid workers had contracted Ebola in Liberia. Kent Brantly, a doctor working with Samaritan’s Purse and Nancy Writebol who worked with SIM USA. They were both given the experimental drug ZMapp and flown home to Emory University Hospital for treatment and have since recovered and been declared fit.
