ABUJA, Nigeria – The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was shaken as news emerged of the death of Alhaji Idirissu Amin, popularly known as Idi Amin, a close associate of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of party in the February 25 elections.
Amin passed away in Abuja after battling a prolonged illness, family sources confirmed on Monday, June 26.
Idirissu Amin, who served as the immediate past chairman of the Maiha Local Government Council in Adamawa State, was also a PDP presidential campaign council member.
His political stature and charismatic character had earned him popularity across Adamawa State and beyond.
His nickname, Idi Amin, drew comparisons to the former Ugandan President of the same name, owing to his commanding presence and dynamic political engagement.
Atiku Abubakar, the flagbearer of the PDP and a former Vice-President of Nigeria, is said to be in mourning following the loss of his close associate.
The two were known to be political allies, with Amin being a prominent member of Abubakar’s campaign.
In a condolence message issued by the chief press secretary to the Adamawa state Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, the late Amin was described as a fearless political activist who contributed immensely to the nation through his service.
Governor Fintiri is also among the prominent figures mourning the loss.
Family sources revealed to Daily Trust that Amin had been grappling with an illness for some time, eventually leading to his demise.
Atiku Abubakar and the PDP will undoubtedly feel the loss of such a vibrant and dedicated figure in their ranks. Amin’s departure leaves a void in the political landscape of Adamawa State and Nigeria at large.
The family is yet to announce funeral arrangements, but it is expected that political figures from across the country will pay their respects to Amin.
