The embryonic twin sister of a 26-year-old woman has been discovered inside her brain during a surgery for a suspected tumour.
The bizarre developing twin which is medically referred to as a ‘teratoma’, was discovered in a complete state with human components such as bone, hair and teeth.
Yamini Karanam, from Indiana sought medical help last September after she started having difficulties conversing and reading.
She said, “If a couple of people were talking in the room, I wouldn’t understand what was happening. I just didn’t imagine any of this.”
Doctors who were speculative as to what was wrong with the Karanam performed a keyhole brain surgery on her only to make the absurd discovery.
The teratoma believed to be Karanam’s twin that never developed was removed by the surgeons.
In a jocular mood, Karanam said that the teratoma was her “evil twin sister” who’s been torturing her for the past 26 years.
According to Mirror UK, Dr Hrayr Shahinian, at the Skullbase Institute in Los Angeles, said it was only the second teratoma he had come across out of up to 8,000 brain tumours he has removed.
