The Nigerian Government has arraigned the convener of #RevolutionNow protest, Omoyele Sowore on charges of treason and insult to the person of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Sowore, the publisher of online news platform SaharaReporters, was arraigned on Monday, September 30, 2019 alongside his co-defendant, Mr Olawale Bakare.
His case was brought before Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, whose courtroom is located on the fourth floor of the Federal High Court.
The DSS on August 3, 2019 arrested Sowore for calling for a revolution through a protest scheduled to hold on August 5.
On August 8, Justice Taiwo Taiwo in the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court granted the DSS permission to hold the activist in custody for 45 days
The duo were brought to the court by operatives State Security Services, SSS, also known as DSS.
The security agents brought Mr. Sowore, into a federal high court in Abuja through the backdoor.
Some supporters of the activist who were outside waiting to catch a glimpse of him did not get to see Sowore.
Spotting a white shirt, Sowore was all smiles as he cheered a few of his supporters who made it into the courtroom.
Alongside Olawale Bakare, his co-defendant, Sowore have been arraigned on a seven-count charge.
Among the charges filed against him are conspiracy to commit treason and insulting President Muhammadu Buhari.
The government also accused Sowore of money laundering and cyberstalking.
He was arrested in Lagos on August 3 ahead of a planned nationwide protest and later moved to Abuja.
The protest, the government said, was aimed at removing the president during his term of office otherwise than by constitutional means.
Justice Taiwo Taiwo had granted Sowore bail last week. However, the secret police refused to release him despite fulfilling his bail condition.
